Here is the gallery page for the restoration work we completed on St Nicholas Priory, Exeter, on behalf of the Exeter Historic Buildings Trust.
The priory is 11th Century and was founded by William the Conquerour in 1087. Further information can be found by clicking here.
This job included the patching and replastering of most of the interior walls and ceilings, and then general re-painting, using lime friendly paints and limewash.
As you can see from the examples above, the Priory was in need of some TLC.
Whilst removing loose plaster off the Dining Room ceiling, we noticed that the underlying Laths were rotten, caused by ageing and a water leak, so the decision was made to pull down the ceiling and replace it.
It was when we pulled down the ceiling, that we uncovered something very interesting......

As you can see, what we uncovered was an original beam.
You could even see traces of Medieval paint still on it, which was a great surprise for us, and the trustees!
